Sustainable and Ethical Integration in Micro- and Nanorobotics Design

Supervisor: Victor Oliva

Personal Introduction

Mehrafarin is a doctoral candidate at MOVIC in collaboration with UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change at ESCI-UPF and Universitat de Barcelona working on life cycle assessment of small-scale robots. The goal of her project is to assess the sustainability and environmental impact of material and process used for production and use of small-scale robots in the GREENS network. Prior to this, she completed her masters in Membrane Engineering for Sustainable Development and her bachelor’s in chemical engineering with a focus on Environmental Engineering.

Project Introduction

Perform and specialized sustainability consulting study by applying expertise in sustainable product design to guide the selection of eco-friendly alternatives to conventional plastics in micro/nanorobot fabrication. Additional aspects, as packaging and material lifecycle analysis will be considered, performing the corresponding analyses of packaging solutions and material choices within the project, and focusing on environmental impact reduction and recyclability enhancement. Finally, it will also be considered the ethical and environmental impact advisory by develop an ethical framework that minimizes environmental impact during material extraction, processing, and end-of-life disposal to develop an ethical framework for micro/nanorobotics design, production, and disposal, incorporating sustainability and ethical best practices.
