GREENS Training School 1
Gothenburg, Sweden • 10–14 November 2025
The GREENS Marie Skłowdowska Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network held its first training event in Gothenburg, Sweden between the 10th and 14th of November 2025. This was the first opportunity for all the partners, supervisors/principal investigators (PIs) and most of the doctoral candidates to meet in person in one location. Other participants that could not make it to Gothenburg also joined the event virtually.
The program featured PI presentations, doctoral candidate introductions, technical talks by PIs and invited subject matter experts, soft-skills workshops, visit to the Swedish Algae Factory and a laboratory tour of some of facilities at the University of Gothenburg, the host university.
Introductory Talks
The event opened with welcoming remarks from Prof. László Péter, followed by an overview of the GREENS project by Dr. Maria Guix, covering objectives, consortium structure, and planned deliverables.
Doctoral Candidates’ Presentations
The doctoral candidates each made a presentation introducing themselves. They talked about their background, motivation, interest, and what they hope to gain by participating in the GREENS project.
Supervisors’ Presentations
The supervisors each made a presentation about their institutions, laboratories, and facilities, and how their research fits into the GREENS project.
Technical Presentations
Some of the supervisors and invited subject matter experts made presentations on different topics relevant to the GREENS project.
- Dr. Marco De Corato — Understanding Fluid Dynamics at Low Reynolds Numbers
- Dr. Maria Guix — Exploring Small-Scale Material Properties
- Dr. Julian Thiele — Stimuli-Responsive Materials for Practical Use
- Prof. Veronica Iacovacci — Magnetic Actuation Techniques
- Prof. Daniel Ahmed — Acoustic Actuation in Micro-Robotics
- Prof. Juliane Simmchen — Chemical Propulsion for Micro/Nanorobots
- Ana Hortelao — Swarms of Micro/Nanorobots: Practical Applications
- Dr. Demian Levis — Swarms of Micro/Nanorobots: Theory
- Dr. Carlo Manzo — AI Workshop
- Dr. Dubravka Eliasson — MSCA Programs Overview
Soft Skills Training
A soft skills presentation on networking and problem solving was made by Dr. Jesus Dominguez. He also introduced an Active Matter board game conceived and developed during the ITN Active Matter coordinated by the University of Gothenburg. Once the session was completed, everyone participated in the fun game, understanding what rules bacteria’s motion!
Visit to Swedish Algae Factory
The participants went on a visit to the Swedish Algae Factory. The company is a beneficiary partner in the GREENS network and will host a doctoral candidate and secondments of other candidates. It makes advanced materials from algae, replacing harmful and less efficient chemicals in different applications and products. Professor Angela Wulff and other executives provided guided tours around different areas of the factory.
Participants also visited the Rehanav Circular Park, a consortium of different companies and organizations which includes the Swedish Algae Factory with each company using the products or waste products of another and drastically reducing waste by over ninety percent.
Participants were also taken to the Smögen beach area, which is a popular tourist and resort area, especially in the summer.
Laboratory Tour
Participants were taken on a laboratory tour of some of the Physics and Chemistry facilities at the University of Gothenburg.
Social gatherings
Participants had lunch and dinner together on several occasions over the course of the event and got to know each other better.
