Filipe and Prof. Angela Wulff participated in the Nordic Algae Symposium 2026 from 14th to 15th October, 2026 in Bergen, Norway.
He delivered an oral presentation on a step-by-step extraction with deep eutectic solvents, which recovers compounds from diatom biomass while keeping the silica frustule intact. The first results show that a hydrophobic solvent recovers about four times more of the omega-3 fatty acid EPA than a hydrophilic one, and the frustules look intact so far.
Prof. Wulff also presented the poster “Beyond biosilica - multiple valuable biomass fractions in diatoms”, on the lipids, pigments, proteins and carbohydrates that diatoms hold beyond the silica.
